Off-Shore Clean Energy Infrastructure
Situated in the North Sea near the German-Dutch border, the combined EnBW Hohe See and Albatross wind farms form one of the largest offshore wind complexes in Europe.
Engineering in Extreme Environments
Installing heavy turbines deep at sea presents severe logistical challenges:
Offshore Foundations: Monopiles and jacket structures must withstand aggressive saltwater corrosion and heavy wave action.
Weather Constraints: Construction is restricted to narrow seasonal weather windows.
Power Transmission: High-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter platforms are required to transmit energy to the mainland grid without significant power losses.
Together, the 112 wind turbines generate enough electricity to power roughly 710,000 households.
5. Frankfurt Airport Terminal 3 ($4.3 Billion)
Preparing Europe’s Aviation Hub for Growth
Frankfurt Airport (Flughafen Frankfurt am Main) is Germany’s busiest airport. To accommodate long-term passenger growth, construction began on Terminal 3, located on the south side of the airport grounds.
Multi-Pier Design and Staged Opening
Capacity Expansion: Designed to handle up to 19 million additional passengers annually.
Layout: Features a central terminal building connected to Piers G, H, and J.
Pier G Completion: Although construction of Pier G was finalized earlier, its operational launch was aligned with the rest of the complex following post-pandemic passenger traffic realignments.
Full Opening: The complete terminal complex is scheduled to open around 2026.
6. Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg ($5.5 Billion)
Europe’s First Major Tesla Manufacturing Hub
To serve the European market directly, Tesla selected Grünheide in Brandenburg—just east of Berlin—for its first European manufacturing facility.
Strategic Selection and Development Timeline
Site Competition: Germany won the bid over competing site proposals in the UK and Netherlands due to its deep automotive supply network.
Construction Speed: Using early-approval permits, Tesla built the factory in roughly two years despite initial local environmental objections regarding water usage and deforestation.
Operations: Formally opened in March 2022, the facility produces electric vehicles (Model Y) and battery cells, employing over 10,000 workers.
7. Berlin Brandenburg Airport – BER ($7.5 Billion)
A Cautionary Tale in Infrastructure Planning
Intended to consolidate Berlin’s air traffic following the reunification of Germany and the closure of Tempelhof, Tegel, and Schönefeld, Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) became one of the most troubled public projects in modern German history.
What Caused the 9-Year Delay?
-
Fire Safety Failure: Shortly before its planned 2012 opening, the complex smoke-extraction system failed inspection, revealing major structural defects.
-
Management Changes: The project saw multiple changes in leadership, technical redrafts, and wiring replacements.
-
Cost Escalation: Originally budgeted at roughly $2 billion (€2 billion), final costs ballooned past $7.5 billion before it officially opened in October 2020.
8. Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link / Fehmarn Belt Tunnel ($7.8 Billion)
World’s Longest Immersed Tunnel
The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is a major cross-border infrastructure project connecting the German island of Fehmarn with the Danish island of Lolland across the Baltic Sea.
Key Infrastructure Elements
-
The Immersed Tunnel: Spanning 18 kilometers, it will carry a four-lane motorway alongside a double-track electrified railway 40 meters below sea level.
-
Pre-fabricated Concrete Elements: Hollow concrete tunnel segments are cast on land in Rødbyhavn, towed out to sea, and lowered into a dredged trench on the seabed.
-
Travel Time Reduction: Once complete, travel times between Hamburg and Copenhagen will be reduced from a 45-minute ferry crossing to a 7-minute train ride or 10-minute drive.

FAQs About Germany’s Mega Projects
Why do large infrastructure projects in Germany often experience delays?
Delays typically stem from strict environmental protection laws, complex bureaucratic approval processes, public consultation requirements, and legal challenges brought by local interest groups or private citizens.
Which mega project experienced the largest budget increase relative to its original plan?
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg both experienced severe cost overruns, with their final costs exceeding four to nine times their initial budget estimates.
Is the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel funded entirely by Germany?
No. The financing model for the immersed tunnel itself is managed primarily by Denmark through user tolls, while Germany is responsible for funding and constructing its own inland road and rail connection links on the German mainland.
What is the primary benefit of converting Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof into an underground station?
Converting the station into a through-station eliminates the time trains spend reversing out of the terminal, significantly increasing overall passenger throughput and integrating the regional lines with high-speed trans-European routes.
